Successful rice farmers work hard to maximize their yields. So do we.
Rice is the most important food crop in the world, playing a critical role in ensuring food security and alleviating poverty. In 2013, farmers grew rice on just under 165 million hectares (ha) worldwide, producing 745 million tonnes. Asia is the largest regional producer, accounting for over 90 % of production.
To operate successfully, rice farmers need consistent quality and high yields. Weeds, pests and diseases can threaten that success. Our herbicide, fungicide and insecticide products help them to control these problems effectively. As a leading developer of herbicide-tolerant rice technology BASF offers the Clearfield® Production System, an innovative agronomic solution. It provides farmers value and benefits to control weeds incl. weedy rice, which is one of the biggest threats in rice especially in the Americas, but also of growing importance in Asia. Clearfield® helps farmers by combining high-yielding seeds with broad-spectrum herbicides tailored to regional conditions, delivering efficient, season-long weed control, crop quality and global market acceptance.
We are committed to promoting effective stewardship on and off the field, and believe that the appropriate management and use of our products helps strengthen sustainable agriculture, as well as safeguarding the environment and public health. For example, in Indonesia we are running Farmer Field Schools to teach effective rice growing practices but also to learn more about the needs of our customers. BASF is a member of the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), a multi-stakeholder partnership that promotes resource efficiency and sustainability throughout the rice value chain.
