Agriculture

Sustainable Agriculture.
Grow More and Sustainably Better Quality Crops.

Over the coming decades, our agricultural food system will undergo an accelerated transformation in order to provide access to enough healthy and affordable food for the growing population. At the same time, it will need to mitigate its impact on our planet so that future generations can flourish. This transformation will be driven by our vision: For the love of farming, the biggest job on Earth.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, which we can only tackle with collaboration. Everyone involved in agriculture needs to work together – farmers, industry, academia, food producers, retailers and civil society. We at BASF are in a unique position to support farmers along the whole value chain – serving the agricultural, food and feed industries – connecting innovation, customers, and society to feed a growing population, protecting our planet and securing that farmers can earn their living.

How do we make a positive impact on sustainably transforming agriculture and food systems?

We are working to achieve the balance between economic, environmental, and social value creation through:

Higher yield per unit of input

Lower CO2e emissions per ton of crop

Reduced food loss and waste

Enhanced biodiversity

Farming is fundamental to the world’s well-being and a cornerstone of everyone’s heritage and culture. Farmers constitute the backbone of the economic system in most of the world’s nations, providing us with food, feed, fuel and fiber as well as employment – from farm workers themselves, to farm equipment producers, food processing, transportation, infrastructure and manufacturing. Agricultural progress has been fundamental to achieving food security, poverty alleviation and overall sustainable development. Indeed, to feed a population of roughly 9.73 billion by 2050, experts estimate farmers will need to increase agricultural productivity by 50% and produce as much food as has been consumed in all of human history.

Farming. The biggest job on Earth.
There has never been a more challenging time in agriculture. But there has also never been a time of greater opportunity. We believe farming is the biggest job on Earth.

How do we aim to achieve economic, environmental and social value creation?

Now more than ever, farmers must pursue productivity and sustainability. They are called on to adopt smarter methods and new technologies while earning a living for their families, feed the world while preserving natural resources and develop resilience to the likes of climate changes and evolving, turbulent local and global market economies. Connecting the best products, technologies and services, we want to positively transform agriculture for impact agricultural food systems and, ultimately, society.

Everything we do, we do for the love of farming. We care about it and its future. We’re here for farmers, growers, and the entire agricultural community. We do everything in our power to build a sustainable future for agriculture by connecting innovation, customers and society.

To help the farmers of today and tomorrow carry out the biggest job on Earth, we have defined four sustainability commitments.

Supporting agricultural transformation through innovation

Greenhouse Manager at BASF European Wheat Breeding Center in Gatersleben, Germany

For us, sustainability means contributing to society’s fundamental needs and helping farmers to be successful in times of climate change, linked to societal and economic challenges. Doing so also secures our long-term profitable growth and renews societal acceptance.

We support sustainable agricultural transformation through our innovation. By combining innovative thinking and practical action, by embedding sustainability even more deeply into the fabric of our business, from R&D to manufacturing, as a state of mind, we create business opportunities that demonstrate our commitment to the future of our planet.

Transformation requires partnership

Driving advances in sustainable agriculture will require multidisciplinary partnerships across the value chain. We must widen our view and gain new insights by working together with like-minded stakeholders who share our vision, such as industry players, academia, NGOs, civil society, and other organizations.

We also fully support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create a framework for sustainable business practices at economic, social, and environmental levels.

Our collaboration projects focus on topics in sustainability where we as a company can make a significant contribution, such as food security, climate action, responsible consumption, and partnership.
