Climate Smart Agriculture At A Glance

Farmers are in a unique position to be part of the solution to combat climate change. Understanding their challenges to adopt sustainable farming practices is crucial to help them reduce emissions and increase farm resilience.

This is why we care about climate smart agriculture. We work to support farmers in decreasing their environmental impact, improving farm resilience, and sequestering carbon in the soil. Moreover, we believe that partnerships are the cornerstone to accelerate the path towards carbon neutrality in the food value chain.

What target did we set for ourselves?

What is Climate Smart Agriculture?
Climate smart agriculture is an approach to agriculture that seeks enhance food security and farmer incomes while building resilience to climate change and reducing or removing greenhouse gas emissions. It relies on using agricultural practices and innovation that are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, while also reducing the impact of farming on the environment and protecting natural resources.

What impacts do we aim for to reach this target?

Reduced on-farm carbon footprint

Increased yield

Monetize CO2e efficiencies

Enhanced biodiversity

Improved soil health

What is our approach?

We are helping farmers tackle the most pressing climate challenges with the right combination of technologies. Our technologies include

  • nitrogen management products that improve fertilizer efficiency

  • innovative fungicide products that enhance and maintain yields when the crop plants are under pathogen attack

  • new forms of chemical and biological insecticides that have a more gentle effect on the environment

  • herbicide products that enable minimum tillage, reducing both carbon emissions from the soil and diesel use

  • new crop varieties that enhance yield and are more stress-resilient

  • natural biological inoculants and

  • innovative digital solutions.

How do we contribute to the needed transformation of the agri-food system?

Managing the climate crisis is an absolute priority of our industry and directly related to nature loss. To contribute to the transformation of the agri-food system, our commitment to climate smart farming centers on the key change drivers of sustainable agriculture.

Our work is focused on emissions reductions and carbon sequestration, soil health, and biodiversity.

Our offers enable farmers and agricultural value chains to transition to climate smart farming. We understand these as a systems approach that can achieve more than the sum of its parts: an ecosystem of innovative solutions and practices, which we leverage through our and our partners’ know-how to synergically drive farm profitability, climate resilience, CO2e savings and optimal resource use at the same time. In other words, to achieve “better yield”.

This is where we stand now
  • We have begun a series of multi-year carbon field trials to verify the potential of our best offers in achieving CO2e emission reductions and carbon sequestration.

  • We have launched our Global Carbon Farming Program, which will be the pivotal element of our approach to decarbonize agricultural value chains by joining forces with farmers and value chain partners.

  • Our approach also looks at Climate Smart Agriculture holistically, beyond carbon efficiency: soil health and biodiversity protection to best foster holistic resilience in agriculture.
