Global Carbon Farming Program
Your partner in delivering shared value through sustainable agriculture

At BASF, we not only recognize and leverage sustainable agriculture as a catalyst for positive change in climate and nature, we also contribute to the long-term competitiveness of agriculture itself through carbon farming, with a focus on soil health and CO2e reduction. This is why we developed our Global Carbon Farming Program, to enable farmers worldwide to tackle climate change, and become pioneers in a market already experiencing weather extremes.

We empower farmers:

  • with a strong portfolio, including technologies, and expertise
  • to simplify farm management for greater efficiency and accessibility
  • to improve soil health, biodiversity and water availability with better management practices
  • to enhance natural capital from farming

We provide value chain partners with:

  • a “one-stop-shop” to validate their decarbonization efforts by leveraging our scientific expertise and working with a credible digital carbon framework
  • linkages to independent verification registries to measure, monitor, report, audit and deliver carbon credits
  • evidence of their decarbonization programs through increased transparency, concrete proof points, and a strong portfolio

Our highlights so far from the Global Carbon Farming Program

Biofuel Carbon Intensity Project, USA
In the United States, BASF and Anew Climate are committed to helping maximize the benefits for farmers, retail agronomists and biorefineries. Our shared mission is to make low-CI grain valuable and achievable for all parties across the biofuel value chain.

KlimaPartner Landwirtschaft, Germany
BASF and RWZ have joined forces in the Climate Partner Agriculture project to gain scientifically sound insights into how CO2e in agriculture can be reduced by up to 30% per ton of crop yield.

Boortmalt, Ireland
The world’s leading malted barley provider, Boortmalt, chose BASF to successfully generate the first SustainCERT Verified Impact Units (VIUs) by reducing and removing on-farm greenhouse gas emissions. The Global Carbon Farming Program has resulted in average savings of 2.3 tons CO₂e per hectare, reducing GHG emissions by nearly 90% and bringing barley production closer to net-zero.

NEWGREEN rice project, Japan
Alongside NEWGREEN, BASF will support Japanese farmers to adopt technologies that reduce water use and methane cultivation from rice cultivation – which accounts for around 40% of methane emissions in Japan. The project plans to launch a pilot for a carbon credit program by 2026.

Simpsons Malt, UK
BASF is recording all on-farm crop management practices at Simpsons Malt’s UK sites via its Global Carbon Farming Program. Gold Standard independently verifies the reduction of value chain (scope 3) GHG emissions achieved by Simpsons Malt as part of the Gold Standard Value Change Program. BASF contributes to this process by monitoring and reporting the results.

Cérèsia, France
BASF is running a carbon offsetting pilot in collaboration with Cérèsia in France. So far, a 50% average reduction in ammonia emissions into the air, 12% reduction in the carbon footprint linked to the spreading of nitrogen solution and 2.1% gain in yield has been recorded.
