Protecting Water Bodies
Protecting water bodies near or adjacent to agricultural land from various potential sources of pollution from crop protection product use is essential to proper stewardship. Several best practices are established to handle everything from leaching into groundwater to the appropriate handling of tank mix residues.
Another great source of technical training material and best practice guidance is CropLife Europe's project "Train Operators to Prevent water pollution from Point Sources" (TOPPS). Visit this page for more information.
Biobeds/biofilters also constitute a practicable solution to deal crop protection product drips, spills, splashes, as well as to deal with contaminated water from equipment cleaning and container rinsing. They can be designed in different ways. Here you can find some basic information on biobeds.
For detailed information on biobed/biofilter construction as well as several other techniques for water protection, please consult the The Voluntary Initiative's website.
