Before Application

Several steps are required once a product has been selected for use and before applying it.

1. Read and understand the label

See this infographic by CropLife International on the importance of thoroughly understanding the label before using any crop protection product.

2. Decide the right application time and rate

The time and rate of application make a difference – both in efficacy and in ensuring the safest use of crop protection. The main factors to look out for are:

  • Crop age
  • Disease stage
  • Weather conditions

See here or further below for BASF's e-Learning on the responsible use of crop protection products, addressing best practices (including for the management of pesticide residues). For further insight on the topic of residues and Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), please visit this page.

3. Use adequate spraying equipment

It is fundamental to perform proper maintenance of all spraying equipment, including regular inspection and calibration, as outlined by this CLI infographic.

For specific material on application technology and drones, please consult the dedicated page.

See the media gallery below for additional material on best management practices pertaining to spraying equipment.

4. Mixing and loading

Attention to the following is recommended:

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as per the label.
  • Use a containment pad for mixing and loading.
  • Use a secure platform to access sprayers for loading.
  • Use an anti-backflow device to prevent back-siphoning into a water source when filling the sprayer.
  • Do not leave the sprayer unattended when filling.
  • Use proper agitation rates to ensure good mixing. Over-mixing can lead to foaming and spills.
  • Check for leaks, sound hoses and faulty valves.
  • Contain and manage any spillage.
  • Maintain sprayer and keep it in good condition.
