Algeria

La Clinique Agricole Mobile

In Algeria, 70% of farmers own and operate small to middle-scaled farms of less than 10 hectares. These farmers contribute greatly to the GDP and employment rates in Algeria.

Why

Farmers in Algeria mostly have inadequate levels of agricultural training and resources, leading to low yields and low crop quality. BASF launched the Mobile Agricultural Clinic in the country’s rural areas to offer access to agricultural know-how and input.

How

In partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Agromosta, SRID, CASAP and Institut National de Protection des Végétaux, BASF is supporting farmers in adopting good agricultural practices, thereby increasing their yield and their income. By providing technical advice, BASF assists farmers in controlling crop diseases and responsibly using agricultural inputs. On the clinic days, growers bring samples of their crops and meet with BASF technical experts who diagnose the crop disease and recommend a cure. This is done via pictorials to ensure the recommendation is also understood by farmers who are unable to read. Farmers also get stewardship training on the responsible use of crop protection products and the importance of safety through the use of Personal Protective Equipment.

Clinics in Algeria focus on potatoes, grapes, cereals and legumes. Since 2019, clinics traveled from the northeast to the northwest of Algeria, to arrive to the south in November 2021. PPE kits were handed out to all participants and seminars were organized by BASF’s local product stewardship team. They usually relied on support by local retailers or farmer cooperatives and did not count on explicit institutional support.

SDGs

We support smallholder farmers in rural areas to grow more quality food and increase their incomes by providing them with trainings and technical advice.

We never compromise on safety for healthy lives and sustainable farming. We train farmers on product stewardship and safety awareness, promoting the use of Personal Protective Equipment.

We build agronomic know-how through trainings and by sharing our expertise on good agricultural practices.

We increase the project’s positive impact by establishing a successful partnership with different stakeholders who share our vision and goals for the project, like the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture, Institut National de Protection des Végétaux and agricultural distributors.
