What are Bio Fungicides?

Bio fungicides represent a category of biological crop  protection, also known as “biocontrol”, “biologicals”, “biological pesticides” or “bio pesticides“, which are products based on living organisms and natural compounds that offer protection against many damaging pests and diseases.

These biological products are developed out of microorganisms and natural compounds that are usually occurring in nature. They are isolated and enhanced to provide growers with new tools for their disease management planning that differ from conventional products.

Our bio fungicides such as Serifel® help growers meet sustainability challenges by applying different modes of action to control a broad spectrum of plant pathogens, across a wide range of crops, in a natural way.

Key benefits of Serifel®

Reduction of residues

Biologicals for fruits and vegetables like Serifel® are a complementary or an alternative solution to conventional crop protection products which can help growers to meet society’s ever-growing demand of more sustainably grown food.

Because they are often exempt from Maximum Residue Level (MRL) classification, biological control products help growers manage the demands of food retailers and consumers to further minimize residue levels on crops.

Resistance management

Our bio fungicide Serifel® helps combat resistance and reduce inputs when used with conventional crop protection and in integrated crop management systems. It can also be used in organic production.

Extension of application window

Serifel® is highly active at high and low temperatures, has a wide application window and can be flexibly applied throughout the growing season.

How Serifel® works

As part of BASF’s extensive BioSolutions portfolio, Serifel® is a preventative bio fungicide that helps you control disease and meet sustainability challenges.

Based on the beneficial bacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain MBI 600, Serifel® forms a strong shield of protection around plants, providing broad-spectrum disease control through multiple modes of action. It actively produces anti-fungal metabolites, physically excludes bacteria and fungal pathogens, and denies them nutrients.

It’s effective at low doses on a wide range of crops, including aubergines, grapes, lettuce, mushrooms, peppers, small berries, strawberries and tomatoes. It also has a favorable toxicological profile, which makes it safe for users, the environment and consumers.

What Serifel® gives you is the ability to grow healthy, high quality crops, with the lowest possible residues and a lower environmental impact.
