Seeds and Crops

To achieve the best yield, farmers have to apply different farming practices in different regions for different crops. Depending on all variables finding the most sustainable way of growing a crop can be challenging.

BASF has developed AgBalance® to support farmers to find the most sustainable way of growing their crop. For each crop the model has to be adjusted accordingly.

With AgBalance® around 30 different crops (see list below) can already be assessed on a global scale. This number is steadily increasing with new projects. For each crop, the impact of the seed production is assessed. More importantly, the yield of the crop is one of the most crucial indicators, as it determines the efficiency of the cultivation system.

The uptake of carbon and macronutrients (N, P, K) are relfected in a nutrient balance. These balances provide valuable information for farmers as well as serve as the basis to calculate the emissions through leaching. 

By-products as well as crop residues are also considered in the model and emissions resulting are reflected in the respective environmental impact category.
