Did you know a soccer pitch scores big in carbon capture?

As fans gather in stadiums, public venues, and pubs to cheer on their teams in EURO2024, it's worth talking about the benefits of natural turf. While artificial turf is growing in popularity, the use of natural turf is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option. In fact, a soccer pitch can capture and sequester an average of 12 tons of CO2 per year, which is more than one hectare of forest [1]. Natural turfs are also gentle for players (lower injury risk) and have maintenance costs similar to those of their artificial counterparts.

Thanks to advancements in plant breeding, today's natural turfs offer excellent tolerance to shade, disease, drought, and heat stress. Additionally, wear and damage tolerance improves by 1% per year, allowing for increased playing hours and longer seasons [1].
