Mulch Films

Mulch films are used to modify soil temperature, limit weed growth, prevent moisture loss, and improve crop yield as well as precocity. Because of their thickness, use of pigments and their exposure to high solar irradiation, mulch films require proper light and thermal stabilizers with intermediate chemical resistance.

Mainly used for growing food and vegetable crops over extensive areas, much films offer the following advantages:
  • Improved crop quality
  • Water retention
  • Minimization of weed spread
  • Soil temperature control
  • Soil desinfection before sowing

To secure crop yield, mulch films need to be durable. BASF light stabilizers provide protection against solar irradiation and agro-chemicals.

Colored mulch films can be used to improve the properties of mulching for some applications. BASF offers a broad portfolio of colorants for plastics.

BASF offers the polymer ‘ecovio® M’, which contains biobased content and is completely biodegradable. The advantage: The farmer does not have to laboriously collect the mulch films after harvest, but can plow it in directly. This saves time and money.
