The herbicide Butisan® is taken up by the roots, and also by the leaves when applied post-emergence. Pre-emergence application results in Butisan® being taken up by the germinating weeds, and kills them before emergence or very shortly after. Post-emergence treatment is most effective when the weeds are at the cotyledon stage, or up to the 1st true leaf stage. Successful control is achieved if the active ingredient is able to dissolve in sufficiently moist soil and can thus be taken up through the weeds’ root systems as well. If applied to a dry soil surface, it will not be effective until the next rainfall. If weeds such as black grass are emerging from deeper soil layers, and if the soil has not been well moistened for some time, there may be a weaker effect. The prerequisite for the good development of rape and an even emergence of weeds is a seedbed that is firm, moist and free from clods.
