    White tip disease [Phytophthora porri]

    The fungus can survive the winter for years on infected plant debris. As soon as spring starts, spores are formed that infect the plants. The yield quality is reduced by white tip disease. Once infected, plants cannot be sold.

      Leeks are mainly infected, but also onions and chives.

      Pattern of damage

      The Phytophthora porri fungus is first seen as yellowing of the leaf tip this spreads down the leaf causing paper-like, white, discoloration of the leaves which leaches into healthy tissue. Initially lesions are water soaked but eventually dry out. The disease also causes the plant to become stunted.
