Perennial grass weed that germinates from spring to the fall. Highly adaptable to dry as well as fresh sites. Independent of soil type. Spreads from edges of fields. Minimum soil tillage promotes the spread of this grass.
Soft brome [Bromus hordeaceus]
Leaf blades are gray-green. Top surface with soft hair and ciliated (fine hairs) at the margins. The bottom surface with short hair. Three veins on both surfaces, of which the middle is most pronounced.(Picture 1) Ligules grow up to 2.5 mm in length, white, bordered, rarely with teeth or cilia. Auricles are not present. Areas of the stalk with long hair and which are pronounced on the lower blade node. The panicles are stout with short-stemmed spikelets (Picture 2). The glume is covered in soft hair and has a short aristate (bristle on the apex).
