Mealy bugs [Coccidae]
Mealy bugs [Pseudococcidae]
Scaly bugs: are brown to black scaly or bowl-shaped scales which can be found on most parts of the plant (Picture 1). These include the immovableadults. At times, mobile larvae occur. The plants become stunted, leaves are smudged with honeydew and sooty mold, premature leaf shedding. Mealy bugs: white powdered mobile bugs surrounded by wax excrements;cause similar damage to scales (Picture 2). Adult males are midge like flies ( Picture 3) that do not feed.
Mealy bugs occur on many crop plants but are usually found in hot humid conditions. The pest occurs in greenhouses and on houseplants all year long with the ormation of dense colonies. The pest may result in a significant reduction in quality. Mechanical spreading from plant to plant can easily occur. Scales are also normally found in warm climates and can cause significant yield loss in citrus, mango, olives and pome fruit.
At the beginning of any infection, apply insecticides that either have systemic or contact action depending on the accessqbilty of the target insects. It is best to control the juvenile bugs because they are not yet surround by scales and wax excrements.
